At a showcase for the new Windows 10 operating system, Microsoft also introduced their latest product, HoloLens, the first virtual reality headset.
HoloLens is a cordless headset that combines the real world with holographic images for the user.
HoloLens allows its users the ability to design and shape their virtual world with holographic images.
With the point of a finger, the user would be able to add or delete a holographic image from their virtual reality.
The HoloLens production hardware will calibrate itself from the automatic measuring of the user’s interpupillary distance.
According to Microsoft’s website, HoloLens was created from the vision of a world where “our digital lives would seemlessly connect with real life.”
HoloLens is enabled by the new Windows 10 operating system.
What is most important about this new operating system and its relevance to HoloLens is its Continuum feature.
Continuum is a device-specific interface that allows the operating system to be scaled up or down from a tablet to a desktop.
It is designed to allow users to switch seemlessly from a device with a mouse and keyboard to a touch-screen device.
Although Microsoft is the first to release a virtual reality headset, they are not the only company doing so.
One of the many questions being raised about HoloLens is: Why do we need a virtual reality headset?
The headset will have many practical uses in life and in the field of science, but HoloLens was also created for the gaming world and for social media.
Using an augmented reality system, where virtual images are presented over reality images, users may be able to receive help on a production at work, as some videos show.
One of the most beneficial uses for the HoloLens is to allow NASA scientists to explore the surface of Mars through the HoloLens software OnSight.
Scientists at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in California teamed up with Microsoft to create the OnSight software.
The scientists will be able to see a holographic simulation of Mars’ surface with which they can interact. The holographic simulation is based on the data that NASA’s Curiosity Rover collected. Additionally, with multiple users at once, the scientists will be able to interact with the Curiosity Rover, the landscape and each other.
NASA’s program executive for the Mars Science Laboratory mission stated, “It fundamentally changes our perception of Mars, and how we understand the Mars environment surrounding the rover.”
Although all users outside of Microsoft have only used the prototype that still has cords connected, the HoloLens is expected to be released sometime this year, around the time of the release of the new Windows 10 operating system.
Price estimates have not been released by Microsoft at this time.
