Around Schenectady: Proctor’s Theater hosts comedy groups that’ll make you laugh your Valentine’s woes away

By Benjamin Lucas

Looking for somewhere off-campus to spend time with your special someone this Valentine’s Day weekend? For the next few days, our very own Proctor’s Theater is hosting a variety of shows — you can enjoy an improv show one day and watch a campy, over-the-top magic show the next.

Here’s the drop on the upcoming schedule — tickets are available at the box office or online at

Friday, Feb. 13: The Schenectady-based Mop and Bucket Co. (MopCo) improv group may be performing on the unluckiest day of the year, but 10 strong years of improv should be enough to deter any bad omens. You can see them most weeks on Fridays at Proctor’s. Tickets are $14.

Saturday, Feb. 14: If your gut hasn’t been busted by MopCo, then you can see four featured comedians discuss life and relationships in “The Gender Defenders.” The show runs for two hours at $30 a ticket.

Tuesday, Feb. 17: Still hungry for more after your steamy weekend of improvisational theater productions?

If all is still going well with your Valentine, then the world’s best-selling magic show, “The Illusionists,” is the choice for you (if you’re into that sort of thing).

See what The Daily Telegraph hails as “deliciously, self-knowingly over the top and brain-bendingly spectacular — genuinely satisfying family entertainment that should not be missed.”

Tickets start at $20.
