This past Saturday, the Union Men’s Hockey team ventured to the Times Union Center in Albany where they squared off against cross-town rivals RPI, in the third annual Capital District Mayor’s Cup Game. After a disappointing loss to RPI in last year’s Mayor’s Cup, the Dutchmen came into the contest seeking revenge against the Engineers, and they certainly, winning by a decisive score of 8-3.
Forwards Daniel Ciampini ’15 and Mike Vecchione ’17 led the way for the Dutchmen in scoring. Ciampini recorded a hat trick and three assists, while Vecchione tallied five points on two goals and three assists as well. Matt Wilkins ’16 also had a strong performance for the Dutchmen — the 5’ 11” junior from Kimberley, British Columbia, posted four assists.
After trailing RPI by a score of 3-2 heading in to the third period, Union scored six goals to cap off a dominating performance at the Times Union Center. Union also outshot the Engineers 31-13.
Not only was this a big win over their cross-town rivals to capture the Mayor’s Cup, but it also ended a rough three-game losing streak for the Dutchmen, and improved their record to 12-10-2 on the season. Union will be away this weekend as they take on the Harvard Crimson in Cambridge, Mass., on Friday and then travel to Dartmouth for Saturday night’s contest.
