The Union Football team began its 2014 season on the road at Ithaca College on September 6. Last season, the Dutchmen posted a 3-7 record, so going into their opening game against Ithaca, it was important for them to start the season with a win.
Despite a Union comeback attempt in the final minutes of the game, the Dutchmen were unable to secure that heavily sought-after first victory of the season, losing by a score of 21-16.
Union’s offense was led by running back Darnel Thomas ’15, who rushed for a career-high 169 yards on 21 carries with two touchdowns.
Quarterback Connor Eck ’15 had a solid performance, as well, going 22-33 for 199 yards, with no interceptions.
Wide-out Kyle Reynolds ’15 returned to the field after missing all of last year due to an injury. He showed no signs of rust as he made eight receptions for 104 yards in his return to the lineup.
On the defensive side, Chris Carbone ’16 and Tim Lucey ’15 had nine tackles each, while defensive back Justin Waller ’17 posted an interception.
The following weekend, Union hosted Utica College for the Dutchmen’s 2014 home opener.
After taking a 16-0 lead into halftime, the Dutchmen unfortunately weren’t able to hang on, and the Pioneers mounted a stellar comeback to take the win 23-16 on a rainy day at Frank Bailey Field.
Tim Lucey led the Dutchmen in tackles again, with 14, and linebacker Nick Littas ’16 followed him, with 12.
Connor Eck went 17-37 for 153 yards and two touchdowns, while his top target, Kyle Reynolds, had 66 receiving yards and a touchdown on five catches.
While the start of the season may not look to be promising for the Dutchman football squad thus far, they still remain a confident group hungry for their next opponent.
“We have a lot of positive things to take out of our first two games,” said linebacker and captain Nick Pierce ’15.
“We have a great core of guys who know what it takes to win, we just need to make it happen.”
The Dutchmen are coming off of a bye week as they prepare for their matchup against Liberty League opponent St. Lawrence this Saturday the 27 at 1 p.m. in Canton, looking for that inevitable first win of the season.
