“Art Installation Series: Inaugural Artist Aliene de Souza Howell” — Schaffer Library

The Mandeville Gallery and the Schaffer Library have collaborated to bring art to students, faculty and staff while they work and learn. Once a year, a new artist will be selected to create and built an art exhibit within Schaffer Library. This year’s artist is Aliene de Souza Howell, and she has created an exhibit entitled “In the Forest: Aliene de Souza Howell.”


Senior Thesis Exhibitions — Visual Arts Atrium

The visual arts thesis projects of Shiqing “Licia” He ’14, Jami Gunzenhauser ’14 and Caroline Aldrich ’14 are currently on display in the Visual Arts atrium.


Reamer Weekly Movie: Pompeii — Reamer Campus Center Auditorium

This week’s Reamer weekly movie is Pompeii. It will be playing in Reamer Campus Center Auditorium at 8:00 p.m. and 10:00 p.m. on Friday, May 23, through Monday, May 26. The film is an historic drama set in Pompeii as Mount Vesuvius erupted. Pompeii has a run-time of 105 minutes.

“The Singing Eye: Photos and Poems for the Adirondacks” — 5:30 p.m. at the Kelly Adirondack Center 

Professor emeritus of Union’s Department of English Jim McCord and Carol McCord will present their exhibit. Shuttles will leave Old Chapel Circle at 4:45 p.m. and 5:15 p.m., returning to campus following the presentation.

Sixth Annual Ozone BBQ — 2:00 p.m. at Ozone House 

Ozone House, Phi Gamma Delta, Sigma Phi and Phi Delta Theta will host the barbecue. The event will feature live music by alternative-rock band Dionysia. Organic, local food will be served.

Alpha Epsilon Pi and Alpha Delta Phi Open Mic — 3:00 p.m. in Jackson’s Garden

The brothers of Alpha Epsilon Pi and Alpha Delta Phi are hosting a campus-inclusive open mic event. Any member of the campus community is invited to come to the event and sign up to perform music, spoken word or any other form of artistic expression. Following the open mic portion of the event, indie-rock band S. Walcott will entertain attendees. Should it rain, the event will be moved into Alpha Delta Phi’s fraternity house.


The Fifth Annual Spring Jubilee — 3:00 p.m. in Old Chapel

The jubilee will feature the Heavenly Voices Gospel Choir, the Heavenly Liturgical Dance Ministry, the Dutch Pipers, the Garnet Minstrelles and a special guest. Food will be provided for attendees of the event. UNITAS, the Department of Africana Studies, and the Office of Campus Diversity will be sponsoring the event.


Acapella Dance Concert — 5:00 p.m. in Memorial Chapel

The concert will feature performances by the Dutch Pipers, the Eliphalets, the Garnet Minstrelles, the Dance Team, Hip Hop Club, Bhangra, U-Break and In Unison Step Team. According to the event description on Facebook, some dance numbers will be set to a cappella music.

“Greetings from Schenectady: Art by Teddy Benfield ’15” — Wikoff Student Gallery

Teddy Benfield ’15 is a visual arts major from Mystic, Conn. He describes his artistic style “as abstract pop art. [He] get[s] inspiration from a lot of people and things. Specifically, the street art movement of today with artists such as Retna, Pixote and Zio Ziegler.” The opening reception for his exhibition will be on Wednesday, June 4, 2014, from 4:30 p.m. until 5:30 p.m., in the Nott Memorial. The exhibit opens on May 26 and will run until August 7.


Wednesday, May 28, 2014 

Opening Night of ‘Rhino’ — 7:30 p.m. in Yulman Theater 

Rhino is a comedic play presented by Union’s Department of Theater and Dance. The play will feature student actors and run from Wednesday, May 28, until Saturday, May 31, at 7:30 p.m. There will be a matinee performance on Sunday, June 1, at 2:00 p.m. For more information or to purchase tickets, the Yulman Theater box office can be reached at 518-388-6545.


DreamWorks Movie Series: Turbo — 8:00 p.m. in Green House Great Room 

Green House has an ongoing DreamWorks movie-viewing series on Wednesdays at 8:00 p.m. On May 28, the featured DreamWorks film will be the film Turbo. Turbo is a 2013 animated film about a snail that is in an accident, which gives him super speed. The snail proceeds to enter the Indy 500. Turbo has a run-time of 96 minutes.
