Where are all the international students at Union? According to the college’s student body statistics, Union encompasses students from more than 40 countries in the world. Yet, the various cultures behind these individuals seldom become the spotlight of our campus community.
This year, student-run organization World Around U, which helps to raise awareness about world cultures, will be hosting International Night on Monday, May 19, from 5 to 7 p.m. on the Schaffer Library lawn.
The event will feature students from five different continents. Representatives of each country will give short presentations about their own cultures.
Five $30 gift cards from local restaurants will be drawn in a raffle. Here is what the International Night has to offer:
Latin America: the Chilean table will be making two types of empanadas, one fried with cheese and the other baked with meat.
Europe: the German table will be presenting German culture and making pretzels!
Asia: the Chinese table will have performances of the martial art Wushu and a calligraphy competition. Chinese food will be provided. The Japanese table will be making Tamaki Sushi (sushi for guests) and origami. The Vietnamese table will be making spring rolls.
Other countries represented will be: Czech Republic, India, Russia, Australia and Afghanistan. This event is open to all students and the campus community.
Please come join us for the afternoon and learn more about world cultures.
