Miuccia Prada, head of the iconic Prada fashion conglomerate, once said, “Fashion is the first step out of poverty. You have nothing and then you put something on. It is one of the first things you do to elevate yourself — there’s a resistance to fashion — an idea that to love fashion is to be stupid … Clothes are very intimate. When you get dressed, you are making public your idea about yourself, and I think that embarrasses people.”

In the real world, though we are taught not to judge a book by its cover, we often define a person by his or her appearance. For example, if he or she tends to wear yellow, red or light-colored clothing, the public may view him or her as a bright and jubilant person filled with positive energy.

I urge you not to judge fashion as superficial.

Fashion helps people to express themselves more vividly and meaningfully.

Without fashion, we would all look like blank sheets of paper, and everyone would look the same externally.

Living in a world filled with human rights conflicts, economic crises and political issues, we tend to view fashion as an unimportant (or at least irrelevant) component of our everyday lives.

So what makes fashion a topic worthy of being explored?

Fashion employs art and creates beauty. We love clothes that enhance our perception of ourselves in our daily lives.Personally and socially, fashion can make a huge difference in our lives.

Wearing comfortable clothes that fit just right or that express our sense of style can bolster a great deal of confidence in ourselves and our individualities.

In addition, dressing appropriately in accordance to different social contexts can also prove to be a major plus with respect to important circumstances.

For example, when it comes to dressing for job interviews and networking events, not only can the way we dress make us feel more self-assured, but it can also leave a greater first impression on potential employers.

So why should Union have a fashion club?

Everyone has a different style, distinguished from one person’s to the next. Since different styles incorporate different varieties in taste, we can clearly characterize an individual’s personality through the distinct colors, patterns and designs they throw together.Consequently, when we, as a society, have forged different types of dressing codes for different contexts and occasions, we have defined the sole purpose and importance of fashion.

U-Vogue is a new organization at Union, whose objective is to promote the creative aspect of fashion in the world today. As an inclusive and social organization, we aim to cultivate originality and artistic expression regardless of a member’s past experience or fashion-related goals.

U-Vogue is comprised of students with interests including design, show production, styling and promotional relations.

U-Vogue is dedicated to bringing a fashion venue to Union students interested in all different aspects of the fashion world.

We work with Union student designers, stylists, photographers and hair and makeup artists in a way that showcases their talents in a unique way that they may not normally have access.

In the near future, we would like to host fashion shows in which members of the campus community can gain more exposure to the fashion world.

Just like Coco Chanel once said, “I don’t do fashion, I am fashion.”

Everyone has their own sense of style. Let’s enjoy the carnival of fashion landing at Union.U-Vogue looks forward to welcoming you! If you are interested in joining U-Vogue, just e-mail me at cuim@union.edu.
