RAINN Day hits campus: Advocacy against sexual violence

By Dorothy Hazan

This week, MEDlife partnered with Women’s Union, Active Minds, the Counseling Center, Safe Space and Student Allies for Equality for Rape Abuse Incest National Network (RAINN) Day, Thursday, Sept. 26.

The organizations set up a week of events at Union to promote RAINN’s mission to empower college students to educate their peers about risk reduction and recovery resources on their campuses.

According to RAINN’s website, 207,754 individuals are sexually assaulted, on average, 44 percent of which are under the age of 18. The website also states that 97 percent of rapists will never actually spend a day in jail because of their crimes.

College Park Hall hosted a self-defense class at 7:30 p.m., on Wednesday, Sept. 25. The class, taught by Union College Campus Safety, included tips for staying safe on campus and utilizing Union’s blue light system.

This evening, join Active Minds in the fight against rape, abuse, incest and other forms of violence with a screening of the movie Speak at 7 p.m. in Reamer Auditorium.

The event will include popcorn and a discussion led by the Counseling Center about the effects of sexual violence and the importance of speaking up.

The various groups on campus encourage all students to take part in this event.
