By Joanna Chalifoux

One of the best things about the summertime is the release of some of the highly anticipated movies of the year. Whether it is with a hot date or with a group of friends, if you need a break from the summer sun, a great way to cool off is to head to the theater. Here are four of the top new movies to see and their release dates:

The Man of Steel (June 14)

It’s a bird! It’s a plane! No, it’s the new Superman movie! After years of waiting, the release of this sure-to-be summer blockbuster is just around the corner. The beginning of this classic tale is retold again as Clark Kent discovers his superhero identity and his purpose on Earth—to save the world from evil and destruction.

 The Purge (June 7)

If one day a year, the government made all criminal activity (including murder) legal for 12 hours, which crime would you commit? This interesting and creative idea is the plot for the upcoming horror film The Purge. On a night plagued by violence and widespread crime, one family decides to stay locked in their home in order to protect themselves. This becomes impossible when a stranger breaks in, holds them hostage in their own home and forces them to do unthinkable things. A comforting friend with a hand to hold will be necessary for this one!

This is the End (June 14)

Party like it’s the end of the world … at James Franco’s house? While attending a house party at James Franco’s mansion, the world is coming to an end in a devastating and chaotic fashion. Seth Rogan, Jonah Hill and other A-listers join together in a hilarious battle of survival. Adding a comedic twist to apocalyptic films, this star-studded cast of actors is sure to have you dying of laughter.

Despicable Me 2 (July 3)

“There’s another one, I’m gonna die!” The sequel to the beloved Despicable Me is sure to be a hit. The plot is focused on the endeavors of our favorite “villain,” Gru, who is recruited by the Anti-Villain League to help fight against a  new super criminal. This creative and witty film will bring out the little kid in you once again.
