Softball Swings Through Their Season

With a 3-1 conference record the Union Softball team has been fulfilling its expectations for the season and more. Coming off two big wins against St. Lawrence University and Skidmore College, the whole team is fired up.

As sophomore Allyson Staats predicted in a preseason interview “with the talent and attitude that we have as a team we have a chance to do something really special this year.” Staats has a lot to be proud of herself, given her Liberty League honor of Co-Pitcher of the Week, alongside Brittany Grage from the University of Rochester.

Staats pitched a solid no-hitter in the Dutchwomen’s victory over Skidmore and allowed only one run in the victory over St. Lawrence.

With a round of tough games still standing before them the team has a lot to continue to work on, but also a lot to be excited about. The team’s bats have been electric—led by Samantha Chevelier ‘13 with the team high .362 batting average—thanks to the hard work the team has been putting in both on the field and in the batting cages.

Molly O’Brien ‘16 and Aimee Palleschi ‘14 have been keeping the defense strong for the Dutchwomen with their impressive fielding percentage, both of which are above .900.

O’Brien is one from the group of impressive freshmen that have joined the team this season. As note by Kristin Schmidt ‘14 in a previous article, “We’re really looking forward to getting on the field with some new players as well as the returners.”

Another group to keep in mind are the duo of senior captains Chevelier and Sarah Logan, who are gearing up for their last 11 games in the garnet and gray. Logan has an impressive batting and fielding percentage and is a strong presence on and off the field.

While their conference record stands strong at 3-1, their overall record of 6-13 is something the team is constantly trying to improve on during their rigorous season.

The Dutchwomen play an average of 3-4 games per weekend, none of which are taken lightly by the devoted coaching staff and players.

As the weather warms up, make sure to take a trip out to the softball diamond and support the ever fighting Dutchwomen.
