Dutchmen Leave A Lasting Impression

By Michael Mullen

HockeyJust a year after making a spectacular run to the Frozen Four, the Union Men’s Hockey team was back to prove that it was not a one and done deal for the small, liberal arts school from that city no one can pronounce. They sure got their point across. Our Dutchmen won their second straight ECAC championship and rolled into the NCAA tournament confident that playing Dutchmen hockey would pay off.

Head Coach Rick Bennett had led the team to success before, and winning was the only thing on their minds as they faced the defending national champion Boston College Eagles in the East Regional Semifinal.

As I was watching the Dutchmen skate circles around the Eagles, what came to mind was the scene from Remember the Titans where coach Yoast tells his defense to “Leave no doubt.”

Someone turned the switch on that night, opened the flood gates and left Boston College fans everywhere stunned as Union won 5-1. Josh Jooris ‘14 must have eaten his Wheaties because his two goals helped spark the Union offense. Cole Ikkala ‘14, Shane Gostisbehere ‘15 and Daniel Ciampini ‘15 followed by taking turns making the siren sound. By the end, Boston College did not have to be told to warm up the bus.

Although the East Regional Final did not go as planned, the hard work of the men on the Union Hockey Team still deserves an enormous amount of praise.

They represented our school with poise in the national spotlight for a second straight year, and we can all learn something from their level of dedication day in and day out. They have shown that winning breeds winning and with the continued support of our Union fans, the team will keep putting Schenectady on the national radar. So thank you to all of the players, coaches and staff who make Union Hockey so successful.  Great season!
