Ryan Asselin ‘15, Elana Katz ‘14, and Sam Bertschmann ‘14 share their picks for the major Grammy Award category winners for the 2013 ceremony, which will air this Sunday, February 10th.
RECORD OF THE YEAR
Ryan’s pick: ‘Somebody That I Used To Know,’ Gotye ft. Kimbra
With the perfect relationship between its music and piercing vocals, ‘Somebody That I Used To Know’ is an addicting, meaningful song worthy of high praise.
Elana’s pick: ‘We Are Never Getting Back Together,’ Taylor Swift
This girl wins everything. However, ‘Somebody That I Used To Know’ is still on the radio and I would like to see Gotye get some credit for his work this year.
Sam’s pick: ‘Somebody That I Used to Know,’ Gotye ft. Kimbra
This is one of the most unique and memorable songs released in the past year. But mostly, I just wish that Taylor Swift would never, ever, ever win another award. Like, ever.
SONG OF THE YEAR
Ryan’s pick: ‘The A Team,’ Ed SheeranThe award should go to this well-written song with lyrics to which many can relate. The other finalists for this award do not compare, but, for the most part, earned more popularity due to their happier and uplifting tones.
Elana’s pick: ‘We Are Young,’ Fun.
This song has been the staple of countless radio stations, commercials, TV shows, and more.
Sam’s pick: ‘Call Me Maybe,’ Carly Rae Jepsen
Annoying as it is, ‘Call Me Maybe’ is undeniably catchy. This song was arguably the biggest pop culture phenomenon of 2012, inspiring YouTube spoofs featuring performers ranging from Cookie Monster to Barack Obama.
ALBUM OF THE YEAR
Ryan’s pick: Channel Orange, Frank Ocean
Frank Ocean’s story-telling on this album is unmatched; he definitely deserves to win this award.
Elana’s pick: Blunderbuss, Jack White
I think this album has a fair shot here. His solo work was killer this year, and that the album was number one on the Billboard 200 for quite some time.
Sam’s pick: Babel, Mumford & Sons
This album is lovely, and singles such as ‘I Will Wait’ have seen great success on the charts. Their cover of Simon & Garfunkel’s ‘The Boxer’ is especially beautiful.
BEST NEW ARTIST
Elana’s pick: The Lumineers
Oh, how I love the Lumineers. What a win it would be for them. I’m in love with their album.
Sam’s pick: Fun.
This group had a great year. ‘We are Young’ and ‘Some Nights’ continue to be massively popular, more so than any of the singles released by Fun.’s competitors in this category.
