Last week, a group of friends and I were talking about all the opportunities on and around campus that we don’t take advantage of.
I still maintain there’s a very good reason why I haven’t ventured onto one of the basketball courts since freshman year or visited the racquetball court in Alumni Gymnasium ever, but nevertheless we decided that this weekend we would take a well-deserved break from homework and jobs to enjoy ourselves.
Unfortunately, the weather is not exactly conducive for any Jay Street gallavanting or other outdoor activities.
In one of my more brilliant ah-ha moments, I decided that our break would be ice skating. Perfect winter activity! I checked the Union Athletics website, and Public Skating is free for students every Sunday from 2 p.m. to 3:45 p.m. The plans were in place!
I’ve been maybe twice in my entire life (the last time I might have been five and sporting some very cool purple Disney princess figure skates), but I was super excited to go. After a week of dreaming about a Kristi Yamaguchi-style ice skating debut, we met up on Sunday afternoon and headed to the rink!
We may not have done any triple salchows, but I did manage to stay up and moving the whole time. Well, almost the whole time, but does tripping really count as falling? Specifics aside, we had so much fun and managed to relax and forget about the rough week three ahead—all the while avoiding those pesky winter blues!
