Our 25th ranked Union College Women’s Soccer team played Vassar this past Saturday. What should have been a blowout became a thrilling overtime victory for the Dutchwomen. It was Senior Day for the Dutchwomen as they honored the eight seniors: Taylor Bresnahan, Rachel Cohen, Michaela Katz, Jennifer Mansfield, Shelby Marks, Kayla Marti, Emily Rudolph and Giovanna Velardo.
The first half found Union on the wrong side of an unfortunate rebound that hit the crossbar and landed at the feet of a Vassar midfielder who put it in to give Vassar the lead. The team seemed sluggish for the first 45, but the second half was a completely different story.
Mansfield seemed to find her true enemy not in the Vassar defense, but in the crossbar as she hit it twice in the second half. Union’s attack kept Vassar on their heels, trying desperately to prevent the tying goal. But in the 78th minute, midfielder Whitney Bickford ‘15 put a beautiful free kick into the upper corner from 25 yards out.
Goalkeeper Marti made an incredible save on a Vassar breakaway to preserve the tie and send the game into overtime. With the huge momentum swing in Union’s favor, sophomore Mollie Gilchrist found Mansfield and this time she made sure the crossbar would not prevent the game-winning goal as she kept it low and put it right by the Vassar keeper.
Best of luck to the Dutchwomen as they pursue a Liberty League Championship and congratulations to the seniors. Thanks for all of your hard work.
