This spring term, Peter Li ‘15 and Assistant Director of Student Activities Kerrie Wolf formed the “How to Talk to a _____” disussion series. The series meets in Reamer every Thursday during common lunch, filling in the blank with a different group or stereotype, which becomes the focus of these weekly discussions.
Wolf and Li created the series in order to address larger topics such as race, ethnicity, religion, and sexual orientation. During this hour anyone can come to listen, learn through stories and personal experiences of participants, and exchange questions anonymously.
Fatima Hosain ‘15 explained, “I like hearing the perspectives of different groups on campus that I normally wouldn’t interact with. I’ve learned a lot so far, and I’m excited to learn more!”
When asked about the goals for this series, Li responded that the goal was just to start conversation: “Change is a really funny word. I personally am not trying to change anything. I’m just trying to get conversation started. It would be nice to have this campus shift to a more comfortable environment, you might say.”
The series successfully kicked off with “How to Talk to an Asian,” co-hosted by the Asian Student Union on April 12, and continued with “How to Talk to a Muslim,” co-hosted by the Muslim Student Association, on April 19.
Today during common lunch, the group plans to address “How to Talk to a Gay Person.”
