Last Thursday, Pizza Wars returned to Schenectady by popular demand. Several local radio stations (107.7, Q103, 104.5, and 105.7) sponsored the second annual pizza battle.
The goal of the event was to determine the community’s favorite slices in four different categories: best cheese, best specialty slice, best pepperoni and best gluten-free.
Like last year, the Schenectady location saw over 2,000 people throughout the duration of the event. Booths were continually in need of restocking, as pizza at any location did not last long. In fact, the crowd had to be halted a few times due to over-demand.
The winners were announced via the local stations on Friday at 5 p.m. A Schenectady pizzeria (Newest Pizza) was victorious in the best cheese category. Scotia’s 5th and 50th Pizzeria and Deli won for best pepperoni. Finally, Bomba’s Pizza, also of Scotia, took the prize in the best specialty and best gluten-free competitions.
Pizza judges concurred with the crowd; they crowned Bomba’s as the best overall pizza of the selection there.
As the event was so popular, it has already been confirmed for 2013.
Pizza Wars attracted hundreds of local residents who anxiously waited in line at Proctors to try a slice from each participating pizza shop. The event took place from 5 to 9 p.m. on Feb. 2 and featured everything from plain to gluten-free pizzas.
Staff from pizza shops in the Capital Region prepared dozens of pies to cut into samples for Pizza War attendees. Each shop vied for the title of best pizza in the area, which eventually went to Bomba’s on Balltown Road.
