The Open Door Bookstore, located at 128 Jay Street, is the perfect spot for an off-campus afternoon excursion and is a great walking distance from campus, especially on a warm spring day.
The quaint shop, which opened in 1971 and recently celebrated its 40th anniversary, began as a children’s bookstore and has since grown to include a variety of genres for readers of all ages. Janet Hutchinson started working as the store’s manager in 1983, but it wasn’t until 1992 that she and her husband bought it from the original owner.
At first glance, The Open Door Bookstore appears to be a run-of-the-mill neighborhood bookshop. But don’t be fooled by the charming wind chimes hanging on the front door. Hutchinson works hard to keep her business modern and competitive with larger bookstore chains. “Students can download eBooks through our store website,” explains Hutchinson. “If they have any kind of reading device (other than a Kindle), they can download books through Google.” Check out the website and start downloading your next read at: www.opendoor-bookstore.com.
The Open Door Bookstore offers a variety of special events and resources for book lovers. “We have a lot of authors come into the store,” shares Hutchinson. “We have had professors from Union do book signings too, most notably Chad Orzel, who teaches physics.” The store features a “staff favorites” section, which includes books that staff members recommend. “We also have a section called ‘Indie Next,’” explains Hutchinson, “It’s an initiative by the American Book Scholars Association to help offset the effect of the big bookstores on independently-owned bookshops. It’s a list of books that independent bookstores from all over the country recommend—we want to bring these books to the attention of the public.” For a full list of upcoming events, staff recommendations and to see the bestseller list, sign up on the aforementioned website to receive a copy of The Open Door newsletter.
