Embracing the ‘Pure Life’

Sammi Tyler ‘14 has recently become involved in a movement to gain support for the Pura Vida organization.

“I’ve been the Union College campus representative for Pura Vida Bracelets for a year now, and still love it a lot!” said Tyler.

The name Pura Vida means “the pure life” in Spanish, and represents the lifestyle of embracing life and not taking anything that you have been given for granted.

The Pura Vida bracelet company started when two college graduates took a trip to Costa Rica and met a man who was making the bracelets.

The man whom the graduates had encountered was selling the bracelets to support his entire family, and the idea resonated with them. They bought the bracelets in bulk and brought them back to the United States to sell.

The movement was a huge success and now the Pura Vida Company is thriving, and in the process employing many Costa Ricans full time to make the unique bracelets.

In order to advertise, they employ campus representatives, sending them free bracelets and other products to help spread awareness of the company and their message on college campuses across America.

The work that they do in turn provides for the people of Costa Rica, and is helping them in their impoverished state to provide for sources of income. Buying the bracelets helps provide full time jobs for Costa Ricans, and 1% of the profits go to the Surfrider Foundation as a member of 1% for the Planet.

Fairly recently the company added bracelets made for specific causes such as breast cancer awareness.

“I just ordered a philanthropy pack for my sorority, Alpha Delta Lambda, so that we can sell the bracelets and give our profits to yet another great cause,” Tyler said. “The Pura Vida Company is always open to new ways to help the world around us as much as they can, hence their willingness to sell bracelets to groups for a wholesale price in order for them to be used for philanthropy.” [pullquote]’I think the Pura Vida bracelets are more than just another consumerproduct’

“I think that the Pura Vida bracelets are more than just another consumer product. I have been wearing my bracelet for over a year now, and I am still reminded every time I look at it to appreciate life as much as possible.”

As a representative, Tyler is provided with bracelets to give out for free pretty consistently, but a guaranteed way to get them is to order them online at http://puravidabracelets.com.

“They sell all different kinds in all different color combinations, and every bracelet is unique,” she said. “Fairly recently the company added bracelets made for specific causes such as breast cancer awareness. There are always new products coming out, most of which either come from campus rep suggestions or have been run by all of us to get our opinions.

“If anyone is interested in learning more about Pura Vida Bracelets, or has any suggestions they think I should pass on to the company, they should feel free to contact my at my email, tylers@garnet.union.edu,” Tyler said.
