Dutchmen climb to first in ECAC

Over the weekend, the Dutchmen took on both Clarkson and St. Lawrence at Messa Rink. Union came into the weekend trailing Cornell in the ECAC standings by two points, looking to jump them in the standings.

The Dutchmen beat Clarkson 5-2 Friday night as they extended their winning streak against Clarkson to nine games. Mark Bennett ‘15 scored the first goal of his career and Kyle Bodie ‘13 added a goal and two assists to lead the Dutchmen to victory.

This marks the third straight season the Dutchmen have swept the season series against the Golden Knights.

The Dutchmen kept their momentum rolling as they dominated St. Lawrence in a 6-0 victory Saturday night. Union spread the scoring around as five different Dutchmen scored including Matt Hatch ‘14 who added two goals and an assist and Kelly Zajac ‘12 who extended his point streak to nine games.Wayne Simpson ‘13 dished out three assists and goalie Troy Grosenick ‘14 stopped all 26 shots for his fourth shutout of the season.

Union’s penalty kill proved strong as they went 4-for-4 on the night. Union won their seventh game in a row against St. Lawrence, sweeping the season series for the third straight year.

Grosenick earned the ECAC goaltender of the week honors for the second straight week and fourth time this season, stopping 56 of 58 shots on the weekend. The Dutchmen gained four points in the ECAC standings as Cornell dropped both games giving them a two point lead.

The Dutchmen face Colgate tomorrow and Cornell on Saturday at Messa Rink.
