Tough season for Dutchwomen

By Nicole Merigliano

The field hockey team struggled through torrential downpour and high winds throughout the majority of their game this past weekend against the University of Rochester.

One of the goals even blew over but both teams powered through the conditions and finished the game.  Unfortunately the game finished in favor of the visiting team, the Yellowjackets, as the Dutchwomen were defeated 4-0.

Anna Dobrzynski and Allison Beardsley had two goals each to lead the Yellowjackets to the win. The Dutchwomen were looking to secure their first win in the Liberty League, but did not manage to do so although they played a great game given the circumstances.  The players had good passes, communication and mental toughness through the 70 minutes of the game, but unfortunately could not get the ball in the net.

Both Union goalies saw action in the net, as Molly McCune ‘14 made four saves in the first half, and Corey Hedges ‘15 made 10 saves in the second half.  Caroline Moran ‘13 led the team with four shots with Darcy Berger ’15 right behind with three shots.

With the loss, the Dutchwomen fall to 2-11 on the season overall, and 0-4 in the league.  It has been a tough year for the field hockey team, yet there is great potential among every player on the roster and the team has made great strides since the season began.  The field hockey team has one more Liberty League weekend coming up against rivals Skidmore and St. Lawrence, and then finishes out the regular season play the following weekend during Homecoming, all of which are on their home turf.
