Union College’s Drag Ball is coming back to campus for the first time since 1999.
It will take place on Wednesday, June 1, from 8 to 10 p.m. in Old Chapel.
The objective of the ball is to have men dress like women and vice-versa.
The event will feature seven different categories to compete in, which include butch queen, thug, formal wear and kinky couple. The winners from each category will be awarded by three guest judges based upon his or her creative attire and lip-synching capabilities.
Modern languages professor Charles Batson and visual arts professor David Ogawa will be performing and hosting the ball. Lady Godiva will also be performing with the help of a select group of fraternity men.
“I’m thrilled that this event is happening. It offers some excellent visibility for LGBT members of Union’s community, and it is great fun,” said Batson.
“This event is important for Union to have because it’s different,” said Director of Fraternity and Sorority Life Timothy Dunn. “It’s a time where everyone can come together for a grand old time, and there is no pressure.”
The event is being sponsored by members of Greek life.
“I’m excited because the Greeks are supporting it, and it is rare to find that kind of support at other schools. This is just is an example of how different, in a good way, Union’s Greek system is from others,” said Dunn.
Sign-ups for the drag ball are taking place in the Reamer Campus Center this week.
