Legalization debated on campus

On Monday, Oct. 4 at 7:00 p.m., previous Editor-in-Chief of High Times Magazine Steve Hager and prior Drug Enforcement Agent Bob Stutman debated the legalization of marijuana in Old Chapel. Drawing on social, political, and economic reasonings, both men argued for their respective sides, drawing on the age-old rivalry between the “Heads” and the “Feds.”

Both men have been debating the topic for over ten years. Although in disagreement, the men are close friends who do not take each other’s opinions personally. “Just because you disagree with someone doesn’t mean you have to be enemies,” Stutman said at the beginning of the debate.

The speech ended with multiple questions from the audience. During concluding statements, Hager called upon the student body to become active and establish a Students for Sensible Drug Policy chapter.

Although it appeared that the two speakers wanted dynamically different things, they share a similar goal. “All we want to do tonight is bring people together on this issue and make them think,” Hager said.
