Weekend Roundup in Union Athletics

Football: The Dutchmen opened up the 2010 season with a 28-20 loss at Ithaca. The win was a revenge victory for the Bombers as they were upset by Union’s 24-21 win on opening day in Schenectady last season. Heading into the fourth quarter, Ithaca held a commanding 28-7 lead. But the Dutchmen came back and scored 13 points in the final quarter to make it close. Unluckily, they were unable to send the game into overtime. Volleyball: Union had a disappointing weekend at the Bomber Invitational at Ithaca College as they went 1-3 in the tournament. The Dutchwomen dropped their opening match against Widener 20-25, 17-25 and 27-29. Junior Eve Richards had 12 kills in the match, while senior Erika VanValkenberg accumulated 21 digs. Union lost their second match as they fell to St. John Fisher 22-25, 20-25 and 16-25. Richards once again led the way with 11 kills and 12 digs. The team pulled out their only win of the tourney against Rutgers-Newark by the scores of 25-12, 25-16 and 25-14. Rookies Casey Tepper and Marissa Vollmer were major keys in the victory as Tepper recorded seven kills and Vollmer collected 11 digs. In the final match against Skidmore, the Dutchwomen fell behind 2-0 but came back to tie the match at two. Unfortunately, Union’s comeback fell just short as Skidmore prevailed in the final game. Richards had another strong performance with 18 kills. The Dutchwomen will host the Union Invitational this weekend at the Viniar Athletic Center with their first match beginning at 4:00 p.m. against Hartwick.
