Men’s soccer goes 0-1-1 in Liberty League play

Union Men’s Soccer is now 0-1-1 in Liberty League standings after their 2-0 loss to Vassar College. Both teams had great ball possession but struggled to get shots on goal in the first half. Vassar managed to break past Union’s defense early in the second half to collect a shot that bounced off the post to put the team up 1-0. Union fought back and Ethan Strauss ’18 nearly tied the game with a cross from Salvador Lopez Jr. ’20 that hit the post and bounced out of bounds. Vassar finalized the 2-0 scoreline with 11 minutes left in play, making Union 7-2-1 on the season. Union’s game against SUNY Cobleskill was a physical matchup that saw Union emerge with a 1-0 win. Both teams had very few shots in the first half but 18 combined fouls, proving the physicality of the match. Cobleskill came close to scoring in the second half on a set play that had Union goalkeeper Jack Weitzman ’18 diving to come up with the crucial save. Chris Muther ’21 had the game’s only goal with a long ball that hit the crossbar and bounced off the Cobleskill goalie to win the game for Union. Union’s second Liberty League game of the season was against opponent St. Lawrence University. St. Lawrence outshot Union 29-9, but goalkeeper Weitzman was instrumental in keeping the ball out of the net. The game went into double overtime, ending with a 0-0 draw. Union earned its first point and became 0-1-1 in the Liberty League standings. In a decisive 3-1 win against St. John Fisher College, Lopez Jr. scored the first goal of the game by dribbling around several defenders and sinking the ball into the net. St. John Fisher quickly tied the game after being awarded a penalty, but could not hold on to the lead for long. Matthew Gomes ’18 scored the game winning goal in the 82nd minute, and Connor Horan ’19 used his speed to collect a wayward pass and add an insurance goal. Goalkeeper Weitzman continues to be recognized by the Liberty League for his spectacular showings, collecting his second Defensive Performer of the Week award. Weitzman has six shutouts in nine games, and has a 0.877 save percentage on the season. Lopez Jr. continues to lead the team with 10 points, followed by Strauss with 6 points. Midfielder Pedram Malakian ’19 stated, “This was a tough loss to Vassar. We are hoping to do better against future Liberty League teams and make it to the playoffs.”
