Dutchwoman of the Week: Molly McDonald ’17

Clubs/Activities: McDonald is involved with the Baccalaureate Committee, Chemistry Club, Biochemistry Club and is a Union College Admissions Ambassador.

Q: Can you briefly explain how you started doing track and field?

A: I started doing track and field in high school to stay in shape for soccer. I discovered that I loved the sport and continued doing it even after I stopped playing soccer.

Q: Do you have a pre-race or pre-event ritual?

A: I like to do one practice start before each race, but I don’t have any real pre-race rituals.

Q: What are some of your favorite things about being on the track and field team?

A: My favorite thing is definitely training and competing with my friends on the team. Having a smaller team makes us a tight-knit group and we’ll always cheer each other on both in practice and in meets.

Q: What has been the highlight of your athletic career so far?

A: When the 4×100-meter relay with Noemie Bechu ’17, Emma Marlow-Benedick ’20, Reid Nichols ’20, and myself broke the school record and qualified for ECACs at our last meet. We hadn’t been able to qualify for ECACs in the 4×100-meter relay during my previous three years so it’s exciting to be able to go this year!

Q: What runs through your mind during a tough race?

A: As a sprinter I usually don’t have enough time to think during a race, but during a 400 meter race I’ll think about keeping my form and using my arms more when the race gets tough.

Q: Where’s your favorite place to compete?

A: RPI because we have at least two meets there every year. It’s basically been our home track and it’s a nice quick ride to get there.

Q: What are some of your favorite things about Union?

A: I love the campus of course, but also how small Union is. It’s nice to see someone you know everywhere on campus.

Q: What is your favorite thing to eat on campus?

A: The smoothies at Rathskeller are my favorite.

Q: What is your favorite restaurant in the Schenectady area and why?

A: I liked Marotta’s because the food was always good, and the take-out portions were enormous. I’m excited to try the new steakhouse there now though.

Q: If your teammates were to give you a superlative, what would it be?

A: I would win “most likely to bring a fuzzy blanket to a meet.”
