The men’s tennis team began their spring season recently at the St. Lawrence Winter Invitational. The tournament included student-athletes from Union, St. Lawrence, Wheaton and Colby-Sawyer.
There were several rounds of singles play and doubles play in the tournament Zach Kaplan ’19 started off the first round of singles play, defeating his opponent from Colby-Sawyer in his first singles match by a score of 8-2. Sam Varsano ’19 also won his match in the first round against a Wheaton student-athlete by a score of 8-3.
The team went on to play nine matches, and the Dutchmen won five out of their nine matches in the second round of singles play. Del Shunk ’20, David Brown ’17, Max McGeown ’19 and Varsano won their matches in the second round of singles. Shunk and McGeown won matches against St. Lawrence players with scores of 8-3 and 8-4, respectively. Brown and Varsano took on Wheaton players and won with scores of 8-6 and 9-8, respectively.
Additionally, David Bond ’20 competed against a Colby-Sawyer player and won by an 8-5 margin. Union won three out of the nine matches they competed in during the third round of singles. Ian Bank ’20, Varsano and McGeown won their matches against Colby-Sawyer competitors. Bank and McGeown both won by a score of 8-6, while Varsano’s match finished with an 8-4 victory in his favor. The Dutchmen lost all four of their matches in the first round of doubles.
In both the second and third rounds, the team won one of their five matches. Justin Gold ’20 and Brown defeated Colby-Sawyer players with a final score of 8-2 to notch one of the team’s victories, then went on to also beat another set of Colby-Sawyer players in the next round by a score of 8-4. The team’s spring season continues March 4 and March 5 when they will take on Rochester and RIT.
