Women’s basketball off to explosive start

The Union Women’s Basketball team has been off to an fiery start so far this season. Its overall record stands at 9-2.

The team is especially strong at home — its home record is 6-0, while the away record is 3-2.

The Dutchwomen started their season off strong winning games against both Hartwick and Wells. Then, after losing to St. John Fisher, the girls redeemed themselves with a three-game winning streak, defeating Hamilton, Cobleskill and MCLA.

The girls dropped a close contest against Utica on Dec. 30, losing 64-60, by a margin of only four points. The Dutchwomen have been on a four-game winning streak since losing to Utica, defeating Clarkson, Bard, RPI and Skidmore in the process.

So far, there have been several standouts for the team. Abby Katz ’19 has played in all 11 games this season and has definitely been making an impact with a total of 117 points, 91 rebounds, 35 turnovers and 44 field goals on the season.

Natalie Leone ’17 is also performing well for the team, with 34 free throws, eight blocked shots and 32 assists made this season.

Erin Lyons ’17 has also been a force for the Dutchwomen with 21 steals.

The team is led by coach Mary Ellen Burt, who has created a very successful and consistently solid program, as shown in the early success of the team this year.
