Both the Union Men’s and Women’s Track and Field teams wrapped up their seasons over the several weeks as athletes competed in the Liberty League Championships, the Capital District Classic, the New York State Championships and the ECAC Championships.
The Dutchmen finished in sixth place at the Liberty League Championships on April 18, finishing with a total of twelve points.
Steven Cohen ’18 collected four of Union’s points by placing fourth in the 10,000-meter run. Two more points came from the 4×400 relay team of Alex Dolcimascolo ’17, Adam Forti ’17, Tim Woods ’18 and Nick Murdock ’18, who finished fifth in their event.
Two more points were collected by Benjamin Mountain ’17, who placed fifth in the hammer throw.
On the women’s side, the team collected a total of 31 points at the Liberty League Championships, good for fifth place.
Noemie Bechu ’17 placed second in the 200-meter dash, third in the 400-meter dash and was named to the All-Second Team as a part of the day’s festivities.
Bechu joined Hannah Barnes ’18, Leigh Barnhill ’17 and Hannah Najar ’15 for the 4×400 relay team that finished third, collecting another six points for Union.
Bonnie Deyo ’16 led the way in the field, coming in third in the long jump and sixth in the triple jump, collecting seven points overall.
The following weekend the Men’s and Women’s Track and Field teams participated in the Capital District Classic.
The men’s team was led by the 4×800 relay team of Jesse Coull ’16, Justin Zorn ’17, Adam Forti ’17 and Woods, who collected the lone first-place finish of the day for the Dutchmen.
The 4×400 relay team of Logan Fine ’16, Ethan Strauss ’18, Dolcimascolo and Murdock came in third for the Dutchmen. Meanwhile, Jake Ulrich ’17 and Ryan Saeger ’16 both collected top five finishes themselves, finishing in fourth and fifth respectively in the 3,000-meter steeplechase.
On the women’s side, the 4×100 relay team of Molly McDonald ’17, Natalia Ciesielska ’17, Bechu and Barnhill took home first place as did the 4×400 relay team of Bechu, Barnhill, Najar and Barnes.
The Dutchwomen also earned a pair of second place finishes with Bechu grabbing one in the 200-meter dash and Najar taking the other in the 800-meter run. The two other top five finishes for the Dutchwomen came from Jen Ventrella ’16, who placed fourth in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, and Deyo, who placed fourth in the long jump.
The spring season for Union came to a conclusion at the NYSCTC Championships where the men’s and women’s teams placed 13th and 12th respectively.
The highest-place finish for the Dutchmen was Mountain who finished sixth in the shot put. Bechu was the highest finisher of the day for the Dutchwomen, as she placed second in the 400-meter dash, qualifying her for the ECAC Championships.
Bechu joined the men’s 4×800 relay team of Forti, Coull, Woods and Zorn at the ECAC Championships. The 4×800 relay team took home 17th overall, and ran their fastest time of the season at 7:57.27.
Bechu competed extraordinarily well, placing second in the 400-meter dash with a time of 56.33.
She now awaits word on whether or not she qualified for the NCAA Championship, which will be held May 21-23 at St. Lawrence University.
Bechu also competed in the 200-meter dash, where she finished 13th.
