Men’s, women’s tennis teams kick off spring season


The men’s and women’s tennis teams kicked off their spring seasons over spring break on a training trip to Florida.

In Florida, the women’s team first took on Hollins College. All six singles games and two-out-of-three doubles games ended in Union victories.

Danielle Miller ’18, Abby Vickers ’18 and Alyssa Heilmann ’18 all made their Union debuts. All three were victorious, Miller in singles and Vickers and Heilmann in doubles.

Following this victory, the Dutchwomen were defeated by Southeastern, Colorado Mesa and Colby, all by a score of 9-0.

They were also defeated 7-2 by UPR Mayaguez. Vickers won one singles game for the Dutchwomen and the dynamic duo of Natalia Pronchick ’17 and Mina Hsia ’17 won one doubles game.

Following their spring training trip, the Dutchwomen took on conference-opponent Bard in an indoor match.

Union swept Bard 9-0. In singles competition, Pronchick, Hsia, Miller, Hayley Lough ‘16 and Emily Newman ’17 swept all their matches, and in doubles competition, teams of Pronchick and Hsia along with Jessica Maung ’18 and Rachel McNeil ’18 defeated their opponents as well.

Next, the Dutchwomen took on RIT and were narrowly defeated 5-4. In singles competition, Hsia, Lough and Newman all earned wins and in doubles competition, Margaret Oppenheim ’17 and Newman got a win for the Dutchwomen.

On April 14, the Dutchwomen take on Hamilton in a non-conference contest.

On the Dutchmen’s side, play began a bit earlier as the men took on Liberty League-opponent, Skidmore, in late February in an indoor match. The Dutchwomen were defeated by Skidmore 9-0.

Next, the Dutchmen headed down to Florida where they dropped their first match against Southeastern 9-0. They played their second match against Colby and were again defeated 9-0.

Then, the Dutchmen took on UPR Mayaguez who defeated them 6-3. In singles competition, TJ Moor ’16 won a game for the Dutchmen and in doubles competition, Moor and Brendan Conry Jr. ’17 along with Grant Zaccareo ’15 and Spencer Fontein ’16 all earned wins.

Then, the Dutchmen took on RIT, earning their first win of the season as they defeated the Tigers 6-3 in a Liberty League match-up.

In singles competition, Moor, Anthony Laurencio ’16, Zaccareo and Michael Donadio ’15 earned wins for the Dutchmen and in doubles competition, Moor and Conry Jr. along with Zaccareo and Fontein brought in wins as well.

Like the Dutchwomen, the next contest will take place April 14 against Hamilton.
