From the Opinion Editor's Desk: Farewell for Now
Patrick Fergusson
Issue date: 3/6/08 Section: Opinions
Now that last week's business should be behind us, the newspaper can retain some of its normalcy that was lost these past few issues. This is our last issue of the term, and in the spirit of conclusions, and as cliché as it is, I would like to say a few words before we all depart to spring break, and whatever that entails.
First, let me say that I hope all the engineers of the world can forgive me. Over the past month or so I've heard from various engineering majors that there are still some of you, including professors, that are mad about the fact I called some of you out for not understanding that I was joking when I wrote that engineers can't read. Well in the spirit of reconciliation, I apologize again to anyone who still harbors resentment.
On the same note I've been told by some that there are those of you out there still upset about my Fu*k with the Lights On campaign (which is a hit so far, turns out people like sex in the light) and all that implies. So to those of you environmental comedians: I'm sorry I made fun of energy conservation, and Union's rising tuition. Didn't mean to offend you guys too. But hey, for what it's worth, Congress is looking into why schools that are making money are still raising tuition to the point where rising tuition costs are greater than inflation. Fact: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/21420361/. And not to push the issue or anything, but the average private college costs a little over 32,258 a year, almost 15,000 less than Union.
In the end I'm just happy that someone, anyone, whether they're angry or not, reads the newspaper and the Opinions Section enough to feel the need to write in on a given topic.
Anyway, it's been a good first term as the Opinions Section editor, I've enjoyed filling in for Katie, our new co-editor in chief for next year. I do have some unfortunate news though: I, along with Will of World Views, will be spending next term in Washington, D.C. So in light of this, all good things must come to an end. Next term you guys will have a new editor for this section if Katie doesn't sub in for me while I'm gone. I hope you enjoyed some of the drama this section has seen this past term, and I encourage you all to continue to write in with your thoughts, anger, concern, whatever about Union and our community. For as much crap as I and many others give this school, we chose it, it's giving (most) of us a degree, and when it comes down to it, Union can be a pretty good place to spend your undergraduate years. Until fall term 2008,
Patrick Fergusson
