On their way to the North Country, the Men's Hockey team had a chance to do something no other Union College hockey team has ever done before: win seven games in a row. The Dutchmen tied the school record by recording two wins in the previous weekend against R.P.I., giving them six consecutive wins. This tied the record set back first from December 21st, 1996 -January 10th, 1997, and then set again from Nov. 5-20, 2004.
This record was broken Friday night as Union defeated St. Lawrence 3-1 at Appleton Arena, but was snapped the next night at Cheel Arena when Clarkson defeated Union by the score of 3-2. With the win on Friday and losses by Quinnipiac and Michigan, the Dutchmen held the longest win streak in the country.
Going into the game against the Saints of St. Lawrence, the Dutchmen knew that it was going to be a tough battle. In their previous six meetings the Saints prevailed over the Dutchmen each time, including earlier this season as goaltender John Hallas and the Saints shut out the Dutchmen in the Governor's Cup constellation game 4-0.
It looked like this winless streak was going to continue for the Dutchmen in the first period. The team looked sluggish coming out of the gate and the four hour bus ride was definitely noticeable in the teams' lack of aggression on the offensive end.
This led to St. Lawrence drawing first blood when two Saint players came down the ice on a two-on-one. Union goaltender, Corey Milan '11, made the initial save but was unable to stop the rebound put in by Jordan Hack with a little over four minutes remaining in the period. That was the only goal that the Dutchmen let up that period but, it could have easily been more if not for the spectacular play by Milan.
Union came out in the second with a new fire and attitude. Early in the period Union came out with a barrage of shots from Captain Matt Cook '09 and Jason Walters '10. Cook eventually scored 3:33 into the period off of a one-timer from Mike Schreiber '10, who had two assists in the game.
