On Thursday, January 31, Julianna Spallholz, '98, will be returning to Union as part of the English Department's Writers Return: Alumni Writer Series.

The Writer's Series was created by the English department to revisit past students who have entered the literary field, showing that a career in writing is no longer a pleasurable, idealistic dream, but a realistic, rewarding career. Past students will return to Union College to read their work and expose current students to the numerous opportunities available in the literary field. New York Times correspondent Neil Lewis will also join this exemplary group of returning writers later in the term.

Spallholz's writing is untraditional and ground-breaking. She explores and experiments with writing, unafraid to break boundaries and establish new territories and ultimately possesses a truly unique literary style. She is also characteristically known for her rhythmic poetic style of combining performances of her work with the original beat of the local musicians in Tuscon, AZ, where she currently resides.

Most of Spallholz's works consist of prose poetry and short fiction. She often interweaves highly personal tales with unique symbolism and the third person perspective. Her work is often an experimental prose. Despite lacking in traditional grammar, Spallholz's works are so full of raw emotions and profound feelings that they develop an original sense of structure that works wonderfully with her style.

Spallholz's works have appeared in Cake Train, Gargoyle, Cranky, Harness, and Sleepingfish and include "The Cottage Girls and the Burglar" and "The White Cat."

Khusboo Desai, '11, comments, "Spallholz does not follow the old-fashioned rules of poetry. She is very expressive in her writing, and I found the poem I read to be a highly personal piece. I can tell she pours out her feelings in each of her works."

Deidre Finnegan, 11, echoing Desai's sentiments, says, "The poem I read that [Spallholz] wrote was really deep and reflective…of her feelings."

Spallholz's experience is not only limited to her extremely inventive works and successful artistic collaborations. She also extends her influences to the next generation of writers by teaching a writing program in the School of Art at the University of Arizona. She has also taught at Warren Wilson College. In addition, she is the managing editor of Tarpulin Sky Journal, a respected literary journal. An English major at Union, Spallholz received her MFA in creative writing from Goddard College.

Spallholz will speak at 7:30 p.m. in room 215 of the Arts Building.
