Much has changed since the founding of Union's first three fraternities, and with the addition of sororities and multicultural Greek organizations between the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries, Greek life is still very active on campus.

Starting this year, Union created a new position to support and further foster the Greek system. Tim Dunn, Director of Fraternity and Sorority Affairs, was hired to lead the Greek program at Union. He explained that he is "responsible for the overall development, discipline, programming and education of the Greek system." He is also responsible for ensuring that the chapters are all in compliance with college, national, and insurance policies and for appropriating the resources that are available for both fraternities and sororities.

Changes to Greek life have been occurring steadily over the past few years, and with the installment of Dunn's new role, more improvements are expected to come. Tri-Delta President Bailey Rand, '08, noted that her experience with Greek life has spanned since her brother joined the Greek community at Union in 2002.

"During his time here, I thought the Greek system and the Greek morale in general really suffered. It seemed as if Greeks were really being put on the backburner," said Rand. Since joining the Greek community herself, "I think the Greek system has improved. Greeks as a whole-instead of individual chapters-have really come together to fight for a system that we believe in so much. I still believe that we have a long way to go to be fully accepted at Union but am very confident in the positive effects that Tim Dunn is going to bring to our Greek system," Rand noted.

Gamma Phi Beta President, senior Ashley Banta, has also noticed some important changes to the Greek system during her four years at Union. She stated, "I feel that more people are joining Greek organizations for different reasons than they did when I was a freshman. At that time, there was a much larger focus on the social aspects of Greek life. My reasons for pledging were more about forming friendships with people that share the same basic principles as I do. Being on this side of recruitment for the past two years, I have definitely seen a shift toward these reasons for joining Greek life in the potential new members."
