Union College's Yulman Theatre, nestled next to Wold House and behind Richmond Dorm, is home to the college's Theatre and Dance department. Behind the doors of the beautiful brick structure lie two stages, a design department, costumes building/storage, and a lighting and sound booth equipped for studio recordings.
"Although the 'Theatre and Dance Department' is a fairly new title, the department/program is one of the oldest in the nation," remarks Patricia Culbert, artist-in-residence at Union. "The addition of the dance minor is a very new thing."
At Union, one can receive a major or a minor in theatre, and a minor in dance. "[The department is] incredibly liberal arts user-friendly. There is a huge enrollment to take multiple theatre courses, and we do a lot of work with different departments to help make our shows run," Culbert explains.
Anthony Morello, '09, finds satisfaction from doing theatre. "Performing has always been my thing. There's a special relationship you make with your actors in each particular show. It isn't easy making time, because I'm also a Varsity starter on the Union Football team. Each day is long and strenuous, but the satisfaction I get when I'm done each day is worth it."
Upon entering the doors of Yulman Theatre, it is evident that there are many great resources the Theatre and Dance Department have at hand.
To start off, the small production room, located to the left of the lobby coming in through the front door, can be used for a variety of things, including intimate theatre and dance practices. It is typically used for teaching classes. The larger theatre can seat up to 240 people and can be modified in a variety of ways to suit the needs of the production.
Professional companies also come over the summer to use the space. Located behind the large theatre space is the tech shop where the sets are built. The wall connecting the tech shop and the stage can be moved so larger sets can be rolled onto the stage. There is a separate storage facility to house all the sets and larger props that would otherwise clutter the shop.
