The Union College Dutchwomen swept the Sacred Heart Pioneers at the Mesa Rink this past Saturday and Sunday afternoon. Though they were only exhibition games, the two wins improve the Dutchwomen's record to 3-17-2, while the Pioneers had their 10th and 11th loss of the season, and their third lost to the Dutchwomen this season. The Pioneers lost 7-1 to the Dutchwomen on November 27 when Union traveled to Bridgeport, CT.

The final score of Saturday afternoon's game was 4-0 for the Dutchwomen, bringing Lundy Day's first shut out victory. Earlier in the season Day shut out Quinnipiac for a tie, but she made 23 saves in Saturday's win.

Senior Courtney Chais (Plantation, FL) and junior Captain Stephanie Gilbert (Salt Lake City, UT) each had a goal a piece, while freshman Suzanne Ostrow (Boise, ID) had two goals and an assist. The Dutchwomen outshot the Pioneers 35-23 and opened the scoring with less than half a minute remaining in the first period when Chais received a pass from Ostrow and scored from the top of the circle.

Early in the second period Ostrow had her first goal of the game with the assist coming from sophomore defensemen Jackie Koetteritz (Breckenridge, CO) to give the Dutchwomen a 2-0 lead. Only seconds after Ostrow's goal Gilbert capitalized on an opportunity with assists from Gabi Wintner (Calgary, AB) and Elsa Perushek (Maple Grove, MN) and stretched Union's lead to 3-0.

Ostrow's second goal of the game, assisted by freshman Kelly Flemming (Lake Placid, NY), with 5 minutes remaining to play gave the Dutchwomen a 4-0 lead which would be the final outcome of the game.

Sacred Heart put up a greater fight in Sunday afternoon's game, but it was not enough to beat the Dutchwomen who came out with a 3-2 win. Junior Danielle Kimble (Reston, VA) started in goal. Koetteritz and Flemming each had a goal while Wintner had a goal and an assist.

The Sacred Heart Pioneers opened the scoring early in the game to gain a 1-0 lead, but the Dutchwomen would answer with a powerplay goal from Flemming after Maeve Kehoe (Chelsea, QC) had a blocked shot on a quick opportunity. Wintner buried a goal midway through the first to give Union a 2-1 lead, with assists from Gilbert and Suzy Pocock (Sterling Heights, MI). The lead would not last long though as Sacred Heart answered Union's goal only 11 seconds later to tie the game at 2-2. Koetteritz and Ostrow worked the puck up the ice together with Koetteritz putting it in the net for her first of the season and brought Union a 3-2 lead. Kimble made a solid 21 saves for her first win of the season.

Ostrow had a very strong weekend with 4 points - 2 goals and 2 assists, and finished plus-3 on the weekend, leading her to be named ECAC hockey Rookie of the Week.

The Dutchwomen get back to ECAC play this weekend when they host Clarkson on Friday, January 25th at 7pm and St.Lawrence on Saturday, January 26th at 4pm at the Messa Rink.
