The men and women's swimming and diving teams squared off against their cross-town rival, RIP, on Friday night in Troy. The women's team turned in a commanding performance and won 158-84, while the men lost 128-103 in a close meet.
Riding the success of their Liberty League championship and a strong win over Hartwick College, the women's team continued their winning ways to win or come in second in every event. The 200 yard medley relay of Ashley Braniecki, Kirstin Burdett, Andrea Marois and Maria Prendergast took first place to open the meet.
The relay set the tone for the rest of the meet. Sara Callahan and Christina Bladek provided the thunder and lightning for the distance events, placing first and third in the 1000 yard freestyle and first and second in the 500 freestyle. Mary-Kate Baumann was victorious in the 200 freestyle while Sarah Yergeau turned in a career-best time for fourth place. Christa White dominated the sprint events by winning both the 50 and the 100 freestyle.
In the individual stroke events, it was again Union across the board. Burdett posted a victory in the 200 individual medley. Following Burdett's performance were Braniecki and Marois, who took first and second in the 100 butterfly. Amy Nestlerode overcame lingering illness and took another first place in the 100 backstroke.
Union's diving team turned in another solid performance. Molly Freeman and Meredith Nearpass took first and second on the one meter board. Freeman, Nearpass and Libby Fortier went on to sweep the three meter competition. On the men's side, Steve Cohen performed well and placed second on each board.
Despite strong performances throughout the night, the men's team came up short against RIP in a handful of close races. The 200 medley relay of Brian Scarlett, Nathan Seder, Kevin Jung and Todd Herman touched out RPI's relay for first place. Union's second relay of Jack Honor, Conor Donahoe, Lucas Tiziani and John Anderson beat out RPI's second relay by a mere .06 seconds for third place.
