This past Tuesday the Union Men's Basketball team faced the Skidmore thoroughbreds in the Viniar Center. Within the first 16 minutes Nick DiMaggio (#12) brought help to his fellow Dutchmen with three assists; Drew Desmaris (#24) and Chris Bourke (#13) had two assists. The score remained within a two point difference or even throughout the first half; Nick Ciresi (#15) and Steve Madej (#20) with eight points each for the half. Skidmore's Jon Douglas sunk 14 points in the first half, leaving Skidmore with a six point lead.
The score remained tied or within in a few points for the second half as well. With seventeen seconds left in the game some poor calls made by the referees, and some unnecessary fouling called on Union, Skidmore was practically given the advantage of bonus shots. Skidmore won the game 69-64. Final stats have Nick DiMaggio with 13 points, Steve Madej with 14 and Drew Desmaris with 17.
This past Friday night the Dutchmen faced the Clarkson University Golden Nights in Potsdam, NY. Facing off in a dark, gloomy-like gym the men were in for an interesting match. The first point of the game was made by Clarkson's Brandon Linton-who is known for his "helicopter" sound effects from the bench that get the crowd going-at 16 minutes and 50 seconds into the game. Three minutes later Union's Joey Lokitis (#32) sunk a basket to get Union on the board. At the half Clarkson led by nineteen points: 29-10.
During the second half more aggressive and "dirty" play was evident-some moves a little excessive as Clarkson's James Evans pummeled Steve Madej taking a shot from the arch. With this aggression and some unfortunate fouls called on by the referees Clarkson finished the game 51-41.
Saturday night Union faced the St. Lawrence Saints, a game similar to Hamilton, which makes for good competition. The first half was a fast-paced, intense game, with St. Lawrence having a stronger height advantage, finishing with St. Lawrence 37, Union 19. Drew Desmaris sunk fourteen points for the game and Ryan Alexander (#11) brought two assists to help his fellow Dutchmen. St. Lawrence won, 76-49.
This coming Friday night the Dutchmen will face-off the Hamilton Continentals at 8 pm and the Hobart Statesmen on Saturday at 4 pm. Come support your Dutchmen-GO U!
