Winter break 2007/2008 proved to be a time of growth and success for the Union Women's ice hockey team. Their first milestone was recorded with a 0-0 tie against Quinnipiac on December 5th. This was the ladies' first league point in three seasons. Goaltender Lundy Day made her team proud with a stellar effort that granted her a shutout competition.
That league point was doubled on the stat sheet when Union battled out another tie on January 5th against their big rival, RPI. The girls went into the second period down by three goals and fought their way back to tie the game. RPI then scored to take the lead again in the third period, but the women showed their true colors and endurance with they lit up RPI with a mere three seconds left.
Co-writer and hockey fan Dale Chaput described Union's game as, "One of the best match-ups I've seen all season. The girls' hard work is really paying off, and it was such a great competition down to the final seconds!"
Sophomore Brenna Malnar and Senior Courtney Chais both played strong games offensively and defensively with one goal apiece.
The girls showed up with another great effort this past weekend. However the outcome was not in their favor, ending in a 5-2 loss against Colgate on Friday and a 3-0 loss against Cornell on Saturday.
On Friday night, Freshmen Suzy Ostrow and Callie Heywood both had big goals that were complimented by a team effort all the way to the Colgate net. Goaltender Lundy Day tallied up over seventy shots for the weekend with another strong performance.
Another great accomplishment for the women's team that must be mentioned is Freshman Melissa Gentile's achievement as ECAC Rookie of the Week for the first week of January 2008. Congratulations Gentile on all your hard work!
