Basketball season is in full swing and presenting some competitive match-ups.

Union hosted the annual Sig Makofski tournament on January 4 and 5, inviting SUNY Plattsburgh, SUNY Purchase and Gordon College. In the first heat Gordon rolled Plattsburgh (ranked 17th in the Country) winning 80-62, as Union defeated SUNY Purchase 86-64. Juniors Nick Ciresi (#15) and Drew Desmaris (#24) were the high scorers for the game, followed by freshman Drew Goldstein (#33).

In the championship game Union played a strong first half, with starter Delon McAllister (#31) leading in points. The scoreboard remained low for both teams, which was possible evidence of the defensive style brought to the game.

The second half viewed like an entirely different game. Union's Sophomore starter Nick DiMaggio (#12) fouled out of the game halfway through the period, and Gordon's starter Michael Schnackenberg followed with four fouls. With multiple turnovers and a decrease in playing intensity, Union fell behind to an 11 point loss to Gordon (60-49).

The Union College Dutchmen traveled to Western New England College on January 8. During the first half there was a low shooting percentage but fast-paced, strong competitive play; quick passes and heightened intensity, however, led to multiple turnovers. The score was kept pretty close with Sophomore Chris Bourke (#13) cranking out a two and three to balance the score.

During the second half, the pace and intensity continued with several turnovers within the first thirty seconds. Sophomore starter Nick DiMaggio (#12) added some flare to the game with an 'And1' hoop.

Ten minutes into the half, Junior starter Steve Madej (#20) sunk two three pointers to tighten the score 41-36 WNEC. Senior starter Delon McAllister (#31) and Junior starter Drew Desmarais (#24) brought fourth strong forward defensive athleticism with rebounding and defraying WNEC from landing shots. WNEC wins the game 56 points to Union's 45.

This past Thursday, January 10, Union faced the Eastern Connecticut State University Warriors. Nick DiMaggio scored 12 points, with two assists; Steve Madej with ten points and two assists; Drew Desmaris with 17 points and Kyle Grimm with two assists.

The Dutchmen will face Skidmore College this Tuesday, January 14, at 7 pm in the Viniar Center.

The team will continue on to fight the Clarkson Golden Knights on Friday night and the St. Lawrence Saints on Saturday.

The team will return home to face one of their greater competitors, Hamilton College, on Friday, January 25 at 8pm in the Viniar Center-definitely a game not to miss (followed by Hobart on Saturday, January 26, at 4pm).
