Men's Hockey rides hot streak into Winter Term
Issue date: 1/17/08 Section: Sports
The Union Men's Hockey team has made a huge turnaround coming into the second trimester. Before the winter break, the Dutchmen had not won a game since their opening weekend sweep against Ferris State. They were shut out three times, had trouble scoring, and took too many penalties. Most importantly, however, the team was 0-2-2 in the ECACHL. The Dutchmen had to cut down on their mistakes and start winning league games if they hoped to have a successful season.
The Dutchmen started to put things together beginning in front of a hostile crowd at Quinnipiac. The Bobcats had defeated the Dutchmen in all of their six meetings, including five times last season which included Quinnipiac's sweep of Union in the ECACHL playoffs. It was a back and forth battle filled with hard hitting and tenacity. However, Andrew Buote '11 scored his first goal as a Dutchmen midway through the third period to give his team a 4-3 victory and the first league win of the season. Corey Milan '11 made 29 saves in his first career win.
The rest of this six game road trip did not fare well for the Dutchmen as they finished the trip with a 4-3 loss at league foe Princeton and a 5-2 defeat at Providence. After two consecutive losses, the team was happy to finally be home. Union took the ice at Messa Rink against Northeastern, which is the top team in the Hockey East conference and one of the best teams in the country. The Dutchmen found a way to tie the Huskies with the help of Mario Valery-Trabucco '10, who scored his sixth goal of the season, and Milan, who made 29 saves.
The following weekend Union split a weekend series against visiting Nebraska-Omaha. The Dutchmen won the first game 3-2 in overtime as Chris Potts scored the game-winning goal, but they lost the next night for their first loss at Messa this season. The team then traveled to New Brunswick (Canada) to participate in exhibition games at the Pete Kelly Tournament where they won two games and lost one. Union then finished off the winter break with a win against UConn and a come-from-behind win at Army.
