Men's and Women's Swimming and Diving teams top Hartwick and fall to Springfield

The Union Men's and Women's Swimming and Diving teams traveled to Springfield College this weekend for a tri-meet against Springfield and Hartwick College.
Both teams triumphed over Hartwick with the men's team scoring 142.50 points, while Hartwick accumulated 84.50. The women's team won with 153 points to Hartwick's 84.
Springfield had the upper hand over both teams, beating the women with a score of 131.50-110.50 and the men with 145-96 points.
Senior Captain Christa White said, "It was a tough loss to Springfield but there were a lot of great individual swims and we're excited to see what we can do in the weeks to come."
Two of those swims came in the 1000 yard freestyle event which was won on both the men's and women's side by sophomore Steve Schapp and Junior Sara Callahan. Schapp won with a time of 10:04.91 while Callahan won with a time of 10:49.69.
Freshman Kirstin Burdett came through with a win for the women in the 200 yard freestyle with a time of 2:02.66. In the same event, freshman Brian Scarlett had an impressive swim as he negatively split the race to win with a time of 1:48.67.
Junior Kevin Kewin won the 200 yard Individual Medley in a time of 1:59.63. Kewin also won the 200 yard Backstroke with an impressive time of 2:00.00.
The one meter diving event was won by senior Molly Freeman on the women's side. Freeman scored 247.70 points.
Freshman Lucas Tiziani beat the rest of the 200 yard Butterfly field by over 8 seconds. Tiziani finished with a 1:58.48.
The women's sprinters took first and third in the 100 yard Freestyle. White won the race with a time of 55.64 while sophomore Maria Prendergast took third place with a 57.02.
Junior Amy Nestlerode had an incredible race on Saturday in the 200 yard Backstroke. Nestlerode finished in 2:10.24, which is a personal best time as well as less than a second away from the NCAA consideration time.
Schapp and Callahan also won the 500 yard Freestyle with times of 4:54.31 and 5:21.71, respectively.
