Among the important dates not to be found on the Union calendar is Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Subsequently, various organizations around campus--spearheaded by the Kenney Center, AOP, Student Activities, and Dean of Students Stephan Leavitt--have made efforts to increase recognition of Dr. King.
Like past MLK Day activities, plans are to involve as much of the student body as possible in commemoration of Dr. King's life in attempt to unify the Union College community.
Junior Jasmine Maldonado, who was among a group of students and faculty who comprised the MLK day planning committee, stated, "Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service is an opportunity for students to become active in serving their immediate communities and the greater nation. It is exciting to see how the institution is honoring this day by displaying in various ways how Martin Luther King Jr. embodied the spirit of community. I hope students will take notice and make the best of the day."
The events organized for MLK Day range from a clothing drive sponsored by Iota Phi Theta Fraternity to Calvin Level's play, "James Baldwin: Down From The Mountaintop." Among the other events listed are a viewing of PBS acclaimed series "Eyes on the Prize," excerpts from Dr. King's famous and world-changing speech, viewing of "1,000 Hands Embracing All Cultures" exhibit, and a reception for Mr. Level after his performance.
Donald Austin of the Kenney Center provided insight into the coordination of such a large number of meaningful events. Quoting MLK himself, Austin stated, "To be great is to serve. All you need is a heat full of grace and a soul full of love."
Austin went on to say, "the best way to generate change is to lend a positive hand. A lot of us don't think we can generate change, but Martin Luther King and his day of recognition are proof that one voice can do it."
