Last year, a shocking percentage of students reported having experienced some form of harassment, sexual harassment, or sexual assault on the Core Survey put out by the Sexual Assault and Harassment Committee. In light of this report and an understanding of a need for students to be aware of campus policies and their rights, the Sexual Assault and Harassment Committee made new attempts to make information more available to the campus community.
One of the ways this has been accomplished is through the creation of a new website for the community to access. Located in the Student Life section of Union's website, the Harassment/Assault Resources website offers definitions, resources, and valuable information about four main areas of concern-sexual assault, rape, homophobic harassment, and sexual harassment.
Charles Batson, French Professor and Acting Chair for the Committee, this past fall, stated that "this website came about because of our sense that students and the rest of the Union community needed to have individual and constant access to the most updated information concerning these issues. A website can offer that-constant access, where a student or someone else can look in private at what the various options are available to her or to him if she or he is faced with one of these incidents."
Professor of History Andrew Feffer, who is also a part of the Committee, stated that "It is part of the Committee's mandate to improve the educational resources on campus that address the problems of sexual assault and harassment. We determined that a website was necessary, especially for survivors to obtain the best medical and support services, as well as to guide them in the filing of a complaint."
Feffer believes that "the problems of sexual assault and harassment, as well as the problem of homophobic assault and harassment, are so severe at Union that an aggressive campaign has to be undertaken to educate students about the practical measures that can be taken against these problems, as well as their rights.
