The Union women's soccer team was able to keep their momentum going this past weekend as they now prepare for their first match in the Liberty League tournament on Friday.
First though, the team had one last game to handle before they could really begin concentrating on their post-season play. The Dutchwomen traveled to SUNY Geneseo on Saturday where they extended their seven game winning streak.
The team got the win with a pair of goals, each scored by a Cuozzo sister. The younger of the Cuozzo's, Allie, was the first to strike, putting away a goal in the 11th minute of the game off a breakaway pass by fellow sophomore Rachel Schneidman.
Less than 5 minutes later, Allie Cuozzo was back in action, but this time she was helping her sister, senior captain Caitlin Cuozzo, get her own goal. Allie Cuozzo passed the ball across the box where Caitlin Cuozzo was waiting to knock it into the back of the net. In Union's net, sophomore Melissa McDonald had three saves for the day and made her seventh shutout of the season. The final score of the game was 2-0.
With the standings of the Liberty League finally decided, Union will head to William Smith this weekend for the playoff tournament. As host, William Smith is the number one seed, Hamilton is the second seed, and Skidmore is the fourth seed. As the third seed, the Dutchwomen will face undefeated Hamilton at 1:30 PM on Friday. William Smith, also undefeated, will play Skidmore before at 11:00 AM. The winners from each of these games will then go on to play at 12 PM on Saturday.
Union enters the tournament with a ranking of 17 in the NSCAA/adidas National Rankings Poll. Helping them to receive this ranking are players Katie McLean, Allie Cuozzo, Caitlin Cuozzo, and Chelsea Hargis, all of which are in the top ten in points offensively for the Liberty League. Defensively, goalkeeper McDonald's 14 wins and 9 goals against has also put Union where it's at in the standings today. Going into the tournament the Dutchwomen can only hope that this balance between offense and defense will continue to be strong and lead them to a tournament victory.
