The Dutchwomen had a big weekend as they faced off against two Ivy League teams, the Brown Bears and Yale Bulldogs. The pair of home games at Achilles Rink attracted a crowd of fans and parents to open up the ECAC season. Despite the two losses in the books, the team put forth a tremendous effort and kept the crowd intrigued both evenings.
Friday night's season ECAC opener against Brown was a low scoring nail bitter with only one goal all sixty minutes of play. The loan goal came midway through the second period when Brown took a 1-0 lead over Union.
Union did put up a tremendous fight however with a couple of great scoring chances on their 12 shots. Sophomore Brenna Malnar (Soughgate, MI) nearly lit up the goal in the first two minutes of play when she picked up a loose puck in Brown's end. She capitalized on her opportunity and charged the net, yet she was stopped cold by the Brown net minder, Nicole Stock. Stock's twelve saves granted her a shutout. The garnet net minder Lundy Day recorded thirty saves after another stellar performance.
Saturday evening's game against the Yale Bulldogs provided the fans with yet another close contest. The first period was relatively quite on the scoreboard however, the girls effort was in full swing. Yale scored the first goal of the night to take a 1-0 lead in the beginning of the second period. Senior Maeve Kehoe (Chelsea, QC) came up with a huge first goal of the weekend when she blew past the Yale goalkeeper to tie up the score 1-1 before the second period concluded. This was also Kehoe's first goal of her senior season. Kehoe's goal came on a power play when she buried a rebound off a shot from freshman Elsa Perushek (Maple Grove, MN).
Yale came out with energy in the third period to put a quick point on the board, however Union answered back less than a minute later. Brenna Malnar summed up her Saturday night hot streak when she put in an assist from freshman Marissa Gentile (Groton, MA). After nearly half a period with no goals and a tied score, Yale slipped a puck past the Union defense. The time of the third Yale goal was recorded five minutes before the final buzzer. Despite a tremendous effort, and even the pulling of the Union goalie with mere seconds left, Union was not able to tie the game back up. The final score of the night was 3-2 with a Yale victory. Day finished the game with a career high of 54 saves, while the Yale goaltender Jackee Snikeris made 5 stops on her seven total shots.
Though the Dutchwomen came away from the weekend with two losses, they have shown ample improvement each game. "I am very proud of our team as every game has been an improvement from the one prior, and this weekend was our best performance yet. I know there is still much more in us but our hard work is beginning to pay off," commented junior Stephanie Gilbert (Salt Lake City, UT).
The team is now preparing for their travel to Boston next weekend to play Boston University on Saturday in non-ECAC league play.
