The Dutchmen were back in action this week with games against Utica and Oswego State.
Recent performances by junior goalkeeper Rob Kramer have earned him the honor of Liberty League and ECAC Division III Upstate Defensive Player of the week. Kramer leads the league with eight shutouts and is on the verge of setting the record for the number of shutouts in a season set in 1986.
The Dutchmen traveled to Utica this past week and overcame a tough first half to win by a score of 3-0. Both teams played an even first half with the offensive production and opportunities almost identical. Tripp Pietrak started the scoring off in the second half, by sending a penalty kick into the back of the net in the 51st minute. The penalty was a result of Utica goalkeeper Kevin Murphy deliberately taking down Dutchmen Ryan Banagan inside the penalty box.
The second goal of the contest came when Pietrak crossed the ball to Nicky Hoberman in the 63rd minute. Hoberman sent the ball towards the net off of his first touch. This was his first goal of his collegiate career. In the 77th minute, Jack Scott added an insurance goal when he chipped a pass from Paul Angelo over the Utica goalkeeper. Overall, Union recorded a shot advantage of 16-3, with half of their shots on net. Kramer made two saves in net before giving way to backup keeper Harris Fendell.
In their final game of the season, the Dutchmen traveled to Oswego State and played to a double overtime 0-0 tie. This shutout recorded by Kramer was his fourth strait shutout and ninth overall this season. Kramer tied the single season record set in 1986. It marks his 18th career shutout, which is one shy of Union's career record, set by Lee Popper. The Dutchmen had the edge on shots with a slight advantage of 13-10.
The Dutchmen finish the regular season with a record of 11-2-4 (3-1-4 in the Liberty League). The Dutchmen are unbeaten in the last seven games and are scheduled to play Hamilton on Friday, November 3rd at the Liberty League Championships.
