This past weekend the Men's Hockey team participated in the annual Governor's Cup at the Time's Union Center in Albany. This did not end up to be a successful weekend for the Dutchmen as they fell to RPI 3-2 on Friday, and 4-0 on Sunday against St. Lawrence.
Against RPI, Union took an early advantage 1:39 into the game as Luke Cain '11 scored his first goal of the season. Cain gathered the puck to the right of the Engineer goal and knocked the puck off the goaltender to put Union on the board.
After Cain's goal RPI controlled the rest of the period, outshooting the Dutchmen 9-4. But, steady play by Justin Mrazek '08 and the Dutchmen defense help ended the period with Union leading 1-0.
Going into the second period, Union controlled the period until RPI tallied their first goal of the game 7:02 into the frame when Jonathan Ornelas took Lane Cafaro one-on-one where Ornelas took a step on him to rip a wrist shot while falling past Mrazek.
The game didn't stay tied for long as Sam Bowles '08 put in a rebound off of a Brendan Milnamow '09 shot 36 seconds later to give the Dutchmen the lead.
But, Union could not hold on to the lead as the Engineers scored just 13 seconds later off of a goal from Tyler Helfrich, and then exactly one minute later RPI converted on a 3 on 1 opportunity as Andrew Lord received a pass from Ornelas to bury the eventual game-winning goal. This capped off the two minute flurry where the two teams scored 4 goals in less than two minutes.
Even though the Dutchmen outshot and out played the Engineers in the second period, the defensive breakdown just for that two minute span in the second period cost them the game.
Union controlled the third period, outshooting their opponent 14-6, but could not convert on any of their scoring chances, which Coach Nate Lehman thought was the difference in this game. This was also attributed to the Dutchmen power play who was 0 for 5 on their man up situations.
Mrazek ended the game with 21 saves in the defeat, as RPI was led by Mathias Lange who accumulated 28 saves.
