Issue date: 11/1/07 Section: News
On Monday, October 29, the third Fireside Chat with President Stephen Ainlay was held in the Reamer Campus Center Pit.

The topics of this discussion focused on sustainability efforts of Union College and the college's relationship with Schenectady. These issues had been the center of much debate in recent Student Forum meetings, and were thus chosen to be opened up to the general campus populace for further explication.

In previous chats, students were invited to participate and question President Ainlay in regards to any question on any topic.

Student Forum President Jessica Rudin, '08, comments that "while that method drew a bigger crowd, it wasn't entirely fair to President Ainlay…and was not the friendly, informative discussion that [Student Forum] had hoped for."

Ainlay however, was "delighted that there was interest in continuing the 'chats' this year."

Ainlay also commented that the Fireside Chats "continue to provide [him] with a great opportunity to meet with students."

This meeting with Ainlay began with commentary from Rudin and Interfraternity Council President Dave Conelias, '08. These students initiated conversation, stating expectations for the events.

Ainlay and Vice President of Finance Diane Blake then gave participants background information on Union's current and future involvement in both sustainability and Schenectady. This gave a proper platform upon which to ask questions.

Ainlay mentioned after the chat that he "was gratified that so many of the ideas seemed to flow from [Union's] strategic priorities. This is an indication that students have taken the time to familiarize themselves with the details of the plan."

Conelias asked the President a number of questions, one such in regards to the way in which Union College advertises events on campus to the public.

Ainlay encouraged this line of questioning, and told students and faculty present that this was a goal not only of the college, but also of the City of Schenectady Planning Commission, so as to increase relations between the two.
