The "30 Day Series," an awareness program for Union freshmen, kicked off its two-show lineup on October 23 in Richmond House basement.
The first episode was entitled "Binge Drinking Mom," an hour-long film documenting a mother's attempt to reach her daughter about her excessive alcohol tendencies. The mother spends 30 days drinking at least three to four beverages to teach her daughter the effects of this behavior.
The next program, called "Straight Man in a Gay World," was held on the second floor of West College on October 30. The shows are directed by Morgan Spurlock, best known for his film, "Supersize Me."
The program was brought to Union last spring and was overall a success with freshmen students.
According to Todd Clark, Director of Residential Life, "Each RA staff member is required to plan two programs related to diversity this year and '30 Days' was one of the creative brainstorms that our staff came up with last year. Continuing it this year was a good decision, based on the amount of student and faculty interest that it garnered last year."
Last year's event offered six programs, with "Binge Drinking Mom" and "Straight Man in a Gay World" being the most popular and well-received by students.
Senior Joe Martel, Head Resident Advisor of West College, was instrumental in bringing the program to Union.Martel explains, "The series will continue next term with new episodes from the second season of 30 Days, including episodes about illegal immigration, outsourcing, Atheism, New Age, abortion and jail."
The first event, "Binge Drinking Mom," drew a large crowd of students from all different dorms. While most students stayed for the entire episode, many left before the discussion which followed.
Faculty including Assistant Director of Residential Life Jolann Baldwin, Director of Residential Life Todd Clark, Director of Student Activities Matt Milless, Assistant Director for Minerva Programs Sarah Boone, and Professor of Psychology Cheryl Dickter.
