The Union Women's Ice Hockey team traveled a nine hour journey to Detroit, MI this past weekend to battle the Wayne State Warriors. Friday night's opener seemed off to a strong start when junior Dutchwoman Gabi Wintner (Calgary, AB) tipped a shot into the goal from freshman Elsa Perushek (Maple Grove, MN) just mere minutes into the first period. Union also generated another big chance during a first period power play when Maeve Kehoe (Chelsea, QC) made a stellar pass to her teammate, Brenna Malnar (Southgate, MI) who was robbed by the Wayne State goal keeper.

Senior Ashley Kilstein (Cherry Hill, NJ) had the crowd on edge with a two-man rush during the second period, however her shot was also denied by the Warriors between the pipes.

Despite some big opportunities from the Dutchwomen in Detroit, Wayne State was hungry for goals and they answered back with seven goals throughout the evening on their twenty-six shots on goal. Union net minder, Danielle Kimble (Reston, VA) made her season debut in the third period with four saves in her first twenty minutes. The final score tallied 7-1.

Saturday afternoon's round two match-up against the Warriors proved much stronger for the Union women despite the 4-0 loss that read on the scoreboard. Union out-shot Wayne State in the first period 10-6, including two power-play opportunities. "We really came together and worked as a team instead of individuals," stated Senior Kristin Hissong in her comparison of Saturday's game to the previous evening.

The Union women killed a pair of power play opportunities in the first period; however the Warriors capitalized on a delayed penalty call with their first goal at 9:46 in the first period. The goal was a joint effort between Melissa Boal and Sam Poyton. The Warrior scoring continued with a second period opener by Katrina Protopapas and then Brandi Frakie with a quick goal off the face-off. The final goal of the night belonged to Emily Berzins when she fought through the defense and poked in a rebound shot after Day made the initial save.

In goal the Dutchman net minder Lundy Day had a stellar performance stopping thirty-two of the thirty-six Warrior shots on goal. Teammate Linnea Edwardson stated, "We are extremely impressed with how much Lundy is stepping up."

The Dutchwomen are now preparing for this weekend's games at home as they will face off against Brown and Yale at Achilles Rink.
